When plans are announced to demolish the abandoned Pandora Asylum, Kogan Mendez is hired to assess the risk the building poses. An actuary by trade, Kogan is used to calculating worst-case scenarios, but this assignment is personal. His mother died inside Pandora, and the building has never truly left him.

Kogan enters the job expecting to recommend demolition. Instead, he encounters his mother, whose presence within the building defies explanation. She warns him that destroying Pandora will not end what happened there, insisting that those who vanished are still inside.

Kogan prepares to dismiss the experience as stress or grief, until his mother leaves him a journal that begins to predict events before they occur. Confronted with evidence he cannot ignore, Kogan realizes the danger may not lie in the building standing, but in erasing it.

Though he advises against demolition, the city moves forward, eager to eliminate a costly liability and accept a developer’s offer. Faced with the choice to walk away or take responsibility, Kogan buys the building himself and reopens it as an apartment complex, hoping to keep the threat under control with maintenance, occupation, and vigilance.
